1. Starship Troopers (1997)

11 Must-Watch Sci-Fi Movies on Netflix

This is a fantastic film.

Starship Troopers has aged extremely well despite being a widely misinterpreted spoof of jingoism. On the surface, it’s also a lot of pleasure to watch. Get your hands dirty.

2. Don’t Look Up (2021)

 Don't Look Up (2021)

Is this science fiction? I believe it’s science fiction.

It’s science fiction. This concludes the conversation.

Don’t Look Up is far from a flawless film. It reeks of Hollywood faux-activism, is far too long, and far too obvious. But it’s still significant and, dare I say, amusing?

Regardless of its imperfections, I believe Don’t Look Up is a film that has had a net good impact on the world and is worth seeing.

3. Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca (1997)
Sony Pictures

Gattaca is a realistic science fiction film in the sense that it grapples with real scientific theories and their potential influence on humanity. It’s a film about eugenics, but it also raises big themes about predestination and how we may fight determinism. Very cool and intriguing. This is a must-see movie.

4. Looper (2012)

Looper (2012)

Looper is the film that helped Rian Johnson earn the Star Wars gig, which led to The Last Jedi, my personal favorite Star Wars film.

But, other than that, Looper is simply brilliant science fiction. It’s daring in its time travel choices, and it’s just a really stylish film. Take a look.

5. Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982)

Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982)

Is there a more acclaimed science fiction film than Blade Runner? If there is, I’m not aware of it. Perhaps the first Alien or The Thing?

In any case, neither of them is now available on Netflix, thus Blade Runner is most likely the must-see sci-fi film on the service.

6. I Am Mother (2019)

I Am Mother (2019)

I Am Mother, an Australian-made sci-fi thriller starring Hilary Swank and Rose Byrne, portrays the post-apocalyptic story of Daughter, a character nurtured by Mother, a robot tasked with assisting in the repopulation of the Earth. Very tight, odd, and good.

7. The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)

The Mitchells vs. The Machines is one of the sharpest, most approachable children’s films in recent years. It’s the kind of movie that both kids and parents will enjoy watching together.

My brother’s kids have forced me to watch this… eight times so far? Sweet.

8. The Colony (2021)

The Colony (2021)

I recently watched The Colony. It’s actually quite good!

It follows a fairly common trope: wealthy individuals return to Earth years after fleeing it, only to discover that it has been overtaken by new, unknown perils. The Colony, on the other hand, subverts some of these clichés and has some really profound things to say about how we degrade one another. It’s definitely worth a shot.

9. Okja (2017)

Okja (2017)

Is Okja a science fiction film? It’s a stretch, but it’s a good film. Just watch it in any case.

10. Synchronic (2019)

Synchronic (2019)

CNET adore Synchronic so much that they published an entire article just recommending others to watch it. They called it the most underappreciated sci-fi film on Netflix, and they still stand by that statement.

It’s unpleasant, erratic, and frequently makes no sense, yet it’s also fantastic.

11. The Platform (2019)

The Platform (2019)

The Platform is a Spanish sci-fi horror film with a horrifying high premise. Prisoners in a correctional facility are fed in an unusual manner: those on the top floor are fed a colossal amount of food, while those on the lower floors are fed leftovers. The result is chaos.

It’s not flawless, but it’s still worth seeing.
