Pickleball is an awesome sport. If you live in the United States, you’ve probably seen or played pickleball. It’s a fun and fastball game, played with a pickle racquet and a pickleball. It’s great to play at the club or on a modified tennis court or sports court, and it can also be very competitive.
Recently, pickleball has become a massively popular emerging phenomenon. Therefore, it’s important to take a look at some of the greatest players in this sport. It’s estimated that approximately 5 million players of all levels participate annually in the pickleball in the United States alone.
This growing interest has also been good for the professional game. Some of these people started playing pickleball for fun when they were teenagers with their parents or in college.
Many of the best pickleball players also play tennis or badminton, or they still do. All of them are good with their hands and eyes and they all love the sport.

10. Jennifer Dawson
Jennifer Dawson is an incredible player. She’s not only a professional pickleball player, but she’s also a tennis champion. Both on and off the court, she has a lot of power and moves with grace.
She’s also the first person to win a Triple Crown. She did this at the Minto US Open in 2017. She did this by taking first place in the senior pro singles, the women’s doubles, and the mixed doubles.
Many pickleball players started out by playing tennis, so it’s not surprising that Jennifer did the same. You don’t have to know how to play tennis though, to play pickleball. Jennifer says that all you need is a love of ball sports, a love of competition, a strong drive, and a strong will.
Jennifer was a tennis champion for many years before she tried pickleball. She and her husband and business partner, Steve Dawson, now own the Bobby Riggs Racquet and Paddle center in California. Kaitlyn, their son, is also a pro player, which is not a big surprise.
9. Tony Girodo
Toni’s story is very interesting and is pretty inspiring to most people. He and his wife like to travel and explore, so they took their RV around America for a few years. The story goes that they were parked near a pickleball game in Palm Springs one day.
He was interested, so he went over to watch. Before he knew it, he was holding a paddle and playing the game. Tony grew up playing tennis, so he was immediately excited by the speed, ease, fun, and of course, exercise and friendships that come with the game.
Soon he and his wife were going to pickleball tournaments all over the United States in between RV trips.
In 2019, he won the National Senior Games, mixed doubles Silver, the Wickenburg Ranch men’s doubles gold, the Grand Canyon mixed doubles skill Age gold, and the Robson Ranch, Mixed Doubles Skill Age silver. He has won many other tournaments since he started playing competitively in 2016.
8. Leigh Waters
Leigh Waters is the youngest pickleball player who makes a living at it. She’s only 14 years old and lives in Florida. She and her grandfather started playing pickleball for fun.
She soon got really into the game when she realized how fast and fun it was and how good she was at it. Leigh started playing pickleball professionally after her parents encouraged her to do so.
There are a lot of pickleball courts in Florida, and by 2018, she had won several championships. Leigh plays singles and doubles tennis. Her mom is her doubles partner, and the sport has given her a lot of chances.
7. Tyson McGuffin
Tyson McGuffin started playing pickleball when he was 24 years old. The rest, as they say, is history. Mcguffin used to wrestle and play tennis when one of his tennis students asked him to play pickleball, he switched to that sport.
After only two years of playing pickleball, Mcguffin won a major title at the 2017 USA Pickleball National Championships. This made him feel like a well-known name in the pickleball world.
6. Paul Olin
Paul Olin is ranked first in the men’s singles Senior Pro Pickleball Championships and 15th in the men’s senior pro doubles. This year he won the silver medal at the US Open and the gold medal at the Lake Springs Fling, but he has been winning medals since 2017.
Like most people who play pickleball, Paul played tennis in college. After college, he didn’t play much because he was busy with his job as a naval aviator. He retired in 2011. He then had more time to spend with his family, do things he liked, and worked out.
When his mom taught him how to play pickleball, he was hooked. If it seems familiar, it probably is. Paul says that pickleball is fun for everyone who likes sports and fitness, but especially for people who like or like tennis.
He practices a lot because he loves getting in shape through the sport, being competitive in the sport, and the sport itself.
5. Kris Anderson
Kris has always played tennis and in 2014 she was getting ready for a big match when the weather turned bad and started to rain. Kris played pickleball for the first time at the gym after a friend suggested it.
She loved it so much that she sent out and bought her own paddles. That was about five years ago. 2019 Kris is one of the best women’s pickleball players in the United States.
She likes the speed and skill of the game, and her desire to win has helped her move up in the rankings so that she’s now one of the best doubles players. Kris, who was born in Scarsdale, New York, and went to college at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, played tennis at a high level.
Even though she will always love tennis, she still plays it sometimes. She’s very thankful to the United States Pickleball Association for putting the game of pickleball on the map, giving her the chance to excel and surpass travel, and showing her a whole new world.
Kris won her first pickleball tournament in 2014 at the USAPA nationals. She and her doubles partner Tracy Morley won in the Women’s 50-plus division. Her last win was in 2019 at the Texas Open, where she and her partner Dave Weinbach, played mixed doubles and won.
4. Greg Whitfield
If you listen to Greg, you’ll learn that pickleball is a lot like tennis, but smaller, faster, and easier. You also learn that topspin is very important. Greg, who is over 60 and used to be a professional tennis player, started playing pickleball for fun and exercise when he retired from painting.
Soon after, he became a professional player. He is good at the sport and he also teaches other people how to play. He practices every day by doing hard drills, coaching, and making videos and content for his website about pickleball training.
Greg likes to win. He worked hard to win gold and the 5.0 division at both the USAPA nationals and the US Open Pickleball Championships. And he did.
3. Barry Waddell
There’s another tennis pro who switched to pickleball and quickly moved up the ranks to become a pro. His most recent win was a gold medal in men’s senior doubles at the 2019 US Open. Waddell still loves tennis, but his knees started giving him trouble.
When he was 47 he found pickleball and hasn’t looked back since. His claim to fame is that he played his first game in flip-flops. He now wears tennis shoes.
Waddell plays more because he loves it than because he wants to win. He says that playing pickleball keeps him fit, healthy and slim. He is, of course, very good.
2. Terry Brine
Terry is a pickleball player from Canada. He plays in both Canada and the United States. Terry is a very competitive person who only wants to win. He likes to play doubles with people who are just as dedicated as he is.
In 2019, Terry and his partner, Barry Hill, won gold in the men’s 65 plus doubles at the duel in the desert. Since he began playing competitively in 2017. He’s won eight gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Terry’s older friend showed him the game and told him he would love it. He now plays pickleball five days a week and enters as many tournaments as he can. Buzz Summers, a tennis coach, and 82-year-old pickleball player is an inspiration to him.
1. Ben Johns
Ben Johns was the first player in pickleball to get a sponsorship deal. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength and is now ranked as the best player in the world. He played many sports like tennis and paddle before settling on pickleball and the sport will be grateful to him for that.
